Weight Machines
Weight machines are not just fancy pieces of modern “furniture” that sit idle and look good in your home. If you want to look good yourself, you‘ll have to put some effort into the process of building up your body. Whether you want to tone your core or build giant muscles, you will probably need to use a weight machine at some point. Even people that run every day will not get a complete body workout unless they lift weights and do some form of resistance training on a regular basis.
Most weight machines use gravity as the main source of resistance and a combination of pulleys, levers, weights and wheels to transfer the resistance to the person using the machine. Weight machines can offer a relatively safe method for lifting weights at home without the need for spotters as long as they are used properly. When lifting alone, you never want to lift more weight than you can handle, and it is critical to perform your lifting motions the right way in order to prevent injuries.
Some weight machines fall into the stack machine category. Stack weight machines usually have a set of rectangular plates pierced by a vertical bar and lifted upward when the bar rises. The advantage of the stacking setup is that it allows one machine to provide many different levels of resistance over the same range of motion and any weight adjustments require very little work to accomplish. The means of lifting the bar on a weight stacking machine can vary and will usually employ a system of levers, cables, belts and pulleys, sometimes all on the same machine. The weight plates are usually marked with numbers that give the weight of the plate and those above it. On some weight machines the number displays the amount of force being applied and on other machines the number is simply an index showing the number of plates being lifted and you have to do the math yourself.
Plate-loaded weight machines utilize standard barbell-style plates instead of captive stacks of plates. The plate machines combine a bar-end to hang the plates on and like the stack machines, employ levers, cables, belts and pulleys to convey the force to the user. The plate-style weight machines will usually feature a very high mechanical advantage because the plates are lifted and moved through a large range of motion and follow an arc that is not vertical.
Whatever type of weight machine you ultimately choose, you will find that they are almost all universally easy to operate. The best weight machines are simple and self-explanatory, and you can start exercising on most of them right away without a break-in or adjustment period. They can also be very useful for those recovering from injuries.
Weight machines will allow you to isolate a particular body part and rest an injured muscle group while still continuing to work out using other muscle groups. This allows you to exercise, stay in top shape and heal, all at the same time.
