Steppers and Stair Climbers

Steppers, stepping machines and stair climbers were the most popular piece of home fitness exercise equipment before the ellipticals and treadmills became widespread. You will still find steppers and stair climbers in most health clubs though, and they still see plenty of use at home because of their affordable prices, the great workouts they can provide and the economy of space they allow.

If you get out of breath running up a flight a stairs, you know how effective step a machine can be. Stair climbers and steppers are still considered a very good piece of exercise equipment to own for the same reason they became so popular at health clubs; they pack a maximum workout into minimum space. Because stair climbers and steppers deliver such an intense, calorie burning workout, they will always be a good purchase for a home fitness center or home gym set-up.

Stair climbers and steppers that offer varying resistance levels and programmed exercise routines can add an extra cardio challenge to the mix and help stave off boredom during workouts. If you do get bored, it is pretty easy to watch television or read a book while you are on your climbers or stepper if you absolutely must. Models with optional side rails can add a bit of safety and security for beginners, but relying on them forever can prevent you from getting the max workout. Most stair climbers and steppers come in one of two types; those powered by oil or air-filled shock absorbers, and those that employ cable or chain systems. The cable and chain-powered stair climbers and steppers are usually a bit quieter and operate more smoothly, but they will also cost a bit more too.

When considering which model climber or stepper might be the best machine for your home, it can help to examine the different features available. Independent pedals are a good feature and a must if you want to get the most out of your stepper or climber workout. Independent pedal action requires your legs to work against resistance during both the upward and downward strokes of motion. Less desirable dependent pedal set-ups will automatically rotate together in opposing directions. A dependent pedal set-up allows the step machine do half the work for you and removes half the workout and half of the benefits too.

If you want a stepper or stair climber that will last for years of use you should select one with a strong and durable steel frame. A good stepper should not move around, tilt or shake when you’re using it. A good machine will also be fairly silent. Noisy step machines can be annoying to others nearby, and they will make it impossible to hear television or music during a workout. Machines that operate using hydraulic pistons often tend to be the noisiest variety.

You’ll need decent controls and displays in order to fend off boredom and add some variety to your workout. The controls should be easy to operate and adjust, and any speed, time, calories burned or step-count displays need to be easy to read. Steppers and climbers with simulated “hill” programs can add a challenge to your sessions, and features like heart rate targets, speed motivators and customizable courses can also help keep you interested and entertained while you are getting a workout.
